Calculus to thwart OneOfAKind again
ONEOFAKIND first had the trip and handicaps to his benefit, followed by an even bigger weight advantage in their second match-up, but is still searching for a way to get to the winning post before CALCULUS.
Dane Nelson has been summoned to replace Robert Halledeen, who did all he could have in two driving finishes aboard ONEOFAKIND, first at a mile before their last clash at nine and a half furlongs, both decided by less than a length.
Renewing rivalry at seven and a half furlongs ought to move the goalpost closer to ONEOFAKIND's fancy. However, CALCULUS has improved so much under Gary Subratie's care that, allowing Anthony Nunes' ONEOFAKIND seven pounds at a mile, he was still able to come off the home turn a length and a half clear of his rival in January's Alexander Hamilton Trophy.
The Miracle Man, at nine and a half, though giving up nine pounds to ONEOFAKIND, was practically an armchair ride for any jockey worth his salt as Shane Ellis even had time to ease down CALCULUS close home, posing for the cameras while looking across at Halledeen.
Forget the rest of the cast. Subratie has DUKE and AWESOME TREASURE running light to keep ONEOFAKIND honest enough for CALCULUS to pounce, which will again be off the home turn. Nelson will go overweight, at approximately 118lb, erasing what would have been a crucial 11lb advantage at seven and a half furlongs.
Until he crosses swords again with Nunes' Ian Levy and Jamaica Cup winner, FURTHER AND BEYOND, or the handicaps get ridiculous against him, CALCULUS has ONEOFAKIND's formula tucked away in his saddlebag.
