Man shoots at cops the tries to escape by jumping into nearby swamp

A St Catherine man who reportely fired shots at police then treid to escape by jumping into a swamp has been arrested and charged.

He is 34-year-old Michael Luke, otherwise called 'Thumper', a labourer of Riversdale, St Catherine. Luke has been charged with assault at common law, shooting with intent (2 counts), possession of prohibited weapon, and using a firearm to commit a felony.

Reports from the Linstead Criminal Investigation Branch are that about 3:00 p.m. on Friday, October 31, a police team was on patrol along the Bog Walk Bypass in Linstead when they saw Luke acting suspiciously. When a member of the team called out to him, he reportedly ran off.

During the chase, he allegedly pulled a firearm and opened gunfire at the lawmen before throwing the weapon into a nearby swamp and diving in.

A search of the area led to his capture. Luke was later formally charged after an interview in the presence of his attorney.

His court date is being finalised.
