Brutal beating lands wife in hospital for five days

A 51-year-old woman who went down on her knees in court and pleaded with a judge to discontinue an assault case against her husband earlier this year has brought him back to court. This time around, she is alleging that she spent five days in hospital after receiving a brutal beating at his hands.

Her husband, who has been charged with unlawful wounding arising out of the latest incident, did not enter a plea before Senior Parish Judge Lori-Anne Cole-Montaque on Wednesday.

The accused name is being withheld to protect the identity of his wife.

It was shared in court that there was an altercation between the couple, after the complainant asked him about a cell phone he promised to purchase for her.

The complainant said her husband began calling her demeaning names and she warned him to stop. Sometime thereafter, the husband allegedly grabbed his wife and threw her into the door, causing her to hit her head. Allegations state further that the husband punched the complainant all over her body. After the assault ended, blood was seen coming from her ears and she went to the hospital, where she spent five days being treated.

The court heard that it was not the first time the husband had physically assaulted the complainant, to whom he has been married to for two years.

"She went on her knees and begged for him to be freed from the court," the prosecutor said in relation to the earlier offence.

The husband, although adamant that he did not harm his wife, was ordered remanded in custody until January 25, 2024 by judge Cole-Montaque.

"I am a bit concerned about what I am hearing," the senior jurist said.
