Ardenne’s Bonnick lights up ISSA urban basketball
ARDENNE High School's Mowan Bonnick is making waves in the ISSA Urban schoolboy basketball competition with several outstanding individual performances, helping his team to stay in close touch with defending champions Campion College.
In his first year in the under-19 competition, Bonnick, who was outstanding in the under-16 competition last year, has carried that fine form with him to the senior team. In back-to-back games, his team went past the 100-point barrier, with Bonnick delivering sterling performances.
Firstly, against Yallahs High, where his team won 112-28, he scored 39 points while pulling down 38 rebounds.
He was even more impressive against Bridgeport High, where his team registered a massive 158-26 win -- the highest points total by a team in the competition so far, and also the highest by an individual player.
In that game, Bonnick narrowly missed the century mark, scoring 94 points. In addition, he had 39 rebounds, 13 blocks and 13 steals.
According to his coach, Basil Barrett, who has been coaching at Ardenne High for 38 years, Bonnick could easily have gone past the 100-point mark but was taken out of the game early. Barrett believes the 6-foot-5-inch player is special.
"Mohan is a very special talent. He can jump well and is an excellent inside and outside shooter. The sky is the limit for him, and he is a future national senior prospect," said Barrett.
Bonnick is pleased with his performances so far.
"I am very pleased with the work I have put in so far and the results I have gotten for myself and my team," said Bonnick.
Now in fifth form, where he will be taking eight CXC subjects next year, he is looking forward to greater things.
"I would like to do well in my CXC exams, as my dream is to get a scholarship to a college overseas so I can continue playing the game at the highest level," he said.
