Despite UWI's relegation struggles in the Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) this season, striker Thorn Simpson had been in the form of his life, scoring 10 goals before the league came to a halt in March because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The 22-year-old forward, whose ambition is to break the RSPL goalscoring record of 30 goals set by Roen Nelson in 2003, says his performance is no surprise to him and he was even expecting more of himself.

"I know I would do well (in RSPL this season), and I expected more from myself, but I have been hampered by injury," Simpson told STAR Sports. "But I wanted to do much more as I am aiming to break the Premier League scoring record."

Simpson got his first chance in the league with Harbour View in the 2017-2018 season, but because of limited opportunities, he moved to Reno the following season, and after a good start to life in Westmoreland, he requested a transfer to UWI.

However, Reno, who were struggling with relegation at the time, refused to let him go, and Simpson decided to sit out the rest of the season before joining UWI last summer for the start of the 2019-2020 season.

Chance at the Golden Boot

And he is hoping the league restarts as he still believes that he has a chance of taking the golden boot.

"I am here exercising every day, working on my weaknesses, trying to stay positive so we can win the four (remaining) games," he said. "I hope it resumes as I still have the chance to try to achieve something individually."

UWI are all but relegated from the RSPL. The university team sits bottom of the points standings on 18 points, the same as Vere United, and 11 adrift of Molynes United, but Simpson says they will keep fighting until their fate is sealed.

"We have a pretty good team, but what beats us most of the time is [a lack of] concentration at the wrong time," he said. "Most of the times, we outplay teams and score first, but we allowed some goals that we never expected, and not just the defence alone, it's the whole side.

"But we have to play with pride and see if we can win the four games left and try to see if we can stay in the league as there is a possibility if Molynes does not win or draw a game."
