Mt Pleasant still hungry for first title

Mount Pleasant captain Ladale Richie believes the St Ann-based club is well poised to win their first Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) title and said they have not lost sight of their goal despite the league being on indefinite suspension.

Richie says his team has diligently maintain their training regime, as they believe they have a strong chance of becoming champions.

"Mount Pleasant has their programme from Mondays to Fridays, the only thing the team needs is some match practice, as we would be match rusty but condition wise we wouldn't be far away because we are all training.

"We put it (training sessions) in the (team's whatsapp) group for the technical director to see and 90 per cent are putting in the work so far.

"It's hard training by yourself but at least they are maintaining some form of fitness, so it wouldn't be hard to get back up to speed," he said.

Mount Pleasant were one point adrift of leaders Waterhouse when the league came to a halt on March 12 because of the outbreak of the coronavirus and the national player says they were fancying their chances of winning both the regular season and the play-offs this year.

"We were on a good run, we were in good form and we were playing some good football, so I think we have 90 per cent chance of winning the league.

"Last year we were just trying to build a team, but this year we strengthened some areas and the togetherness as a team is better, and as you see our position in the table is higher and we have more points at this stage last season. So I feel good about our chance," he said.

Although he and his teammates eagerly await the restart of the competition, he thinks it's best to wait and see how things develop before making a decision in the league.

"Health comes first so we have to think about our safety, so until we can control the situation, I think it's wise to keep the league postponed," he said.
