Former Harbour View captain and local football legend Jermaine Hue says late former Harbour View and Jamaica players Peter Cargill and Barrington 'Cobra' Gaynor were massive influences on his football career as a young player.

In a live Instagram interview on the Habour View FC page, Hue recalled that in his first full season as a youngster from Port Morant, St Thomas, Gaynor was still a player while Cargill was head coach, and he said that both gave him a great football education as well as life lessons.

"When I came into the team, you had people like the late great Peter Cargill and Cobra (Gaynor), and these people had a big influence on my career," he said.

"Cargill was such a professional. He transformed the club to where they started to become more professional.

"As a youngster coming into Harbour View, these seniors had a big influence. They were always positive, always building my confidence and giving me the ball," he continued.

He said that at the time, Harbour View players nicknamed him 'King', but Cargill was the one gave him the name 'Maestro', a name that has stuck to him.

"When a legend like Cargill gives you a name it has to stick and it has to mean something.

"It's not like nowadays when people on the corner give you a name because I see them calling some people 'Messi', and that's because they predominantly use the left foot, but they have no other characteristics to Messi," he told hosts Clyde and Jhunelle Jureidini.

Hue, who went on to have a very successful domestic career, winning four Premier League titles, was largely ignored by the national team over his career even though he played over 40 games and scored 12 goals between 2000 and 2013.

Cargill, one of Jamaica's 1998 World Cup qualification heroes, died in a car crash on his way to a Premier League match in 2005.

Gaynor died in March 2011 after a nearly four-year battle with the rare amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), or Lou Gehrig's disease, a disease that gradually decreases muscle strength and motor functions.

Both Cargill and Gaynor were known to be strict disciplinarians and consummate professionals.
