Skippa brings dancehall energy to soca stage
Dancehall artiste Skippa stepped into soca territory at WiFete and left a strong impression, delivering a high-energy set at the carnival staple powered by Johnnie Walker, Smirnoff, and Rum Stripe.
Among the night's line-up were soca powerhouses Yung Bredda, Voice, and the Soca King himself, Machael Montano. Reflecting on the experience, Skippa said that performing for a soca-driven audience was a refreshing shift from his usual shows.
"Mi love the vibe, enuh. It different from the usual dancehall crowd, but the energy did mad same way," he said. "Di people dem come out fi enjoy themselves, and once yuh tap into that, everything just flow."
Despite the genre shift, the deejay said he felt right at home on the stage, crediting the crowd's responsiveness for making the moment special.
"From mi step out, mi see the flags, the colours, the whole energy, it just lift mi. Mi enjoy every minute of it," he added.
His performance brought a distinct edge to the night, with commanding delivery and engaging call-and-response moments to songs like WYFL, Currency, and 10 past 2 that kept patrons locked in. Fans in the crowd welcomed the crossover, with one stating that, "Him bring a different kind of excitement. Yuh could see seh him comfortable, and the crowd feed off a dat."
Another patron highlighted the versatility of the lineup, sharing that Skippa's debut on the WiFete stage was one of the night's surprises.
"It show seh dancehall can fit anywhere once the artiste know how fi control the stage," the person said.
With the successful crossover moment under his belt, Skippa hinted that fans can expect more in the coming months.
"New music definitely on the way, and more shows too. Wi just a build and keep the momentum going," he said.
As WiFete continues to blend sounds and cultures under one roof, Skippa's performance reinforced the growing synergy between dancehall and soca, proving that when the energy is right, the vibes know no boundaries.
