Billy Whizz prime for ‘Foggy’ Mullings Memorial
BILLY WHIZZ has no business among overnight-allowance runners after being caught two hops from the line in the two richest races run this year, August's $7.5 million Jamaica Derby and last month's $6 million Jamaica Cup, taking on the best older horses in the country.
The Jamaica Cup, a mix of open allowance and graded stakes runners, was decided by a flipped derby script in which FURTHER AND BEYOND turned the tables on BILLY WHIZZ and CALCULUS, signalling a change of guard in grade one.
However, after finishing a half-length second in the highest-rated handicap this season, 'conditions' of 'having never won an overnight allowance' allow BILLY WHIZZ to technically drop two classes for Saturday's 'Foggy' Mullings Memorial.
Never mind topweight 126lb, the chestnut gelding is the controlling speed in the one-mile race and looked none the worse with 121lb, toying with rivals, to clock 1:26.1 at seven furlongs on December 4.
A free-running pacer, BILLY WHIZZ will relish a mile whereas the majority of his 13 rivals, bar BEST DAUGHTER EVER, SUPREME SOUL and EXCESSIVE FORCE, are either suspect at the trip or susceptible to quit in what will be fast splits.
ONEOFAKIND, who blossomed at the back end of last season and carried over his form with four consecutive victories into this summer, finished down the track in the Jamaica Cup, two races off a four-month lay-up.
Returning three Saturdays ago at seven and a half furlongs, ONEOFAKIND was again outside the frame, finishing fifth behind EROY, FURTHER AND BEYOND and ROY ROGERS at seven and a half furlongs. Though appearing improved at exercise, ONEOFAKIND's 1:14.1 was listed as a 'flat' gallop, starting almost stationary from the six-furlong pole, hardly the workout to suit a stalker carrying joint topweight in a one-mile event.
BILLY WHIZZ, who had galloped 1:14.3 for the last six furlongs out the mile chute when preparing for his seven-furlong victory, returned to the scene of the crime Monday morning but was throttled in an easy 1:09.0 for five and a half furlongs, no need to floor the pedal nine days after clocking 1:26.1.
Connections of imported BEST DAUGHTER EVER thought she was taking an easy route by avoiding the best of the best in the Jamaica Cup when opting for the Distaff at a mile that afternoon. However, BILLY WHIZZ' stablemate, MAKEUPARTIST, gave the American a proper spanking, allowing her 10lb.
BEST DAUGHTER EVER returns with the exact weight, 116lb, her connections hoping to pull off what they had tried to pull off what they had veered from on Jamaica Day. However, that's jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire against a hot colt, who has made her best times at nine furlongs and 25 yards seem like child's play - almost a three-second difference.
